Eligibility Criteria:


  • Nationality: You must be a citizen of India.
  • Age: The age limit varies depending on the entry scheme. For most entries, it's between 19 to 24 years, but there can be relaxations in certain cases.
  • Educational Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in relevant disciplines is required for most officer entries. Different entries have specific educational requirements.
  • Physical and Medical Standards: Meeting the prescribed physical and medical standards is crucial.

Selection Process:

 There are various entry routes, and candidates need to appear for specific entrance exams depending on the chosen category.

  • National Defence Academy (nda): For candidates who want to join the army after 10+2. The UPSC conducts the Nda exam.By giving this exam a candidate can be an officer in Nda.To join NDA after the 12th, candidates have to appear for the written tests conducted twice every year by UPSC – once during the April-May session and second during the October-November session.
  • Combined Defence Services (CDS): To become an officer in the Indian Army through CDS (Combined Defence Services) exam, one can join IMA, AFA, INA, and OTA. Women can only join OTA Chennai through CDS Exam. UPSC conducts the CDS exam twice a year. The CDS exam is for aspirants who are in the final year of graduation or have passed out of college.
  • Technical Graduate Course (TGC): The TGC (Technical Graduate Course) is a special entry scheme in the Indian Army that allows engineering graduates to join as officers in various technical branches. Under this scheme, eligible candidates who have completed their engineering degree or are in their final year of engineering studies can apply for a direct entry into the Indian Army.
  • NCC Special Entry:The NCC (National Cadet Corps) Special Entry Scheme is a special entry scheme in the Indian Army that allows eligible candidates who hold NCC 'C' Certificate to join as officers. The scheme is aimed at providing opportunities for NCC cadets who have undergone training and obtained the 'C' Certificate to become officers in the Indian Army.
  • Short Service Commission (SSC) and Permanent Commission (PC) Entries: Various entries exist for both men and women, including SSC Tech, Judge Advocate General (JAG), Army Education Corps (AEC), etc.

  • SSB Interview: Shortlisted candidates from the written exams undergo the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview. It assesses various aspects like personality, intelligence, and aptitude.
